What do we do?
Roleplaying and card games as well as board games and war games are the primary focus of GUGS. Our members meet every Tuesday and Saturday to play these games. We also hold social events throughout the year, and send a delegation to the annual student nationals, a competitive gaming event. come down to our meetings, and you can meet our friendly and active membership in person!
What is roleplaying?
Have you ever watched a film and been frustrated at the hero's inability to spot the obvious bad guy, and thought to yourself, "I could do a better job!" Well that is what we call roleplaying: taking on the role of a hero, and playing out his or her stories with a group of like-minded people. From epic stories of barbarians and wizards slaying orcs by the regiment, to stories of honour and reputation among samurai, we create worlds of the imagination and the characters that populate them. You speak in your character's voice, describe their actions, and deal with the consequences. You get to really create something, and share that something with others.
What is Cardgaming?
Card gaming is a type of game that focuses around building a collection of cards (called 'decks') and then using those decks in competitive games with other players. They are highly strategic games, but nevertheless are easy to pick up and play. Our most popular cardgame is Magic the Gathering, and we regularly organise drafts and other events for our members.
What is wargaming?
War gaming is a complex and exciting game of wits where one player attempts to best another with tactics and armies. Collect an army, pick your heroes and set out to wage war. GUGS is committed to encouraging new players and there are many events throughout the year to see war gamers in action and play yourself, even if you don't have an army.
What are board games?
In case you're unaware, board games are fun games one plays with friends that usually have some kind of playing board, but not always. This year our new Non-Rpg Convenor has placed a big emphasis on board games and their value to the society. If you find yourself with nothing to do on a Tuesday or Saturday why not come to GUGS and meet some new people and try out our selection of board games. Alternatively if you can never find anyone to play your favourite board game with bring it to GUGS and we'll be sure to have at least a couple of members who would enjoy playing.
